T.J. Phan (center) chillin' at Great America with future Shrunkenheadmen
This artist of the month page is dedicated to one of the best animators I know, T.J. Phan. I studied alongside this action-packed animator during college and have been enthusiastically admiring his adventures ever since. During school, T.J.’s drawings were always great, his animation even greater, and they've both been getting better ever since!

Rannek the Warrior, Concept for Demon Stone.
T.J. has a beautiful sense of timing and motion, and a keen sense of observation. He’s really good with subtle acting and storytelling, but even in action based animation, is able to convey a clear sense of the character’s attitude and personality. Many people with whom I've shared his work mistake it for motion capture, and are amazed when I tell them it's good old fashion blood, sweat, and keyframing.
Zhai, the Rogue, Concept for Demon Stone.
In addition to great animation and artwork, T.J. is always ready to help others improve. His suggestions have helped more of my projects than I can remember, and he’s always willing to share the wealth. He is directly responsible for the snappy timing on our student film The Most Powerful Kung Fu Temple, and along with Nick Torres directed the timeless classic Justin's Revenge. He includes great notes on his techniques and animation process on his art blog. And though he's one of the most talented guys I know, he's also one of the most modest people you’ll ever meet!

T.J.’s fellow animator, Austin, the Kull!

Tribute to Saturday morning cartoons; Firestar from Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.
Since school, T.J. has worked as an illustrator at Lightsource Studios, as a Senior Animator at Stormfront Studios, and is currently working as a Senior Animator at LucasArts. It’s for all of these reasons that the House of Chai requests you put down your video game controllers long enough to raise your double-edged sword in honor of Mr. August, T.J. Phan. Please visit the links below to enjoy his animation, tips and techniques, and more great work! Thanks T.J., keep firing it up!
