House of Chai - Featured artist of the month
August 2007 - Megan Kelly

Megan and the man himself, Matt Groening, Fox Party 2007.

This is a great month to showcase the work of Megan Kelly, considering that the first project she worked on after graduating from college was released in theaters just five days ago!

Megan Kelly, the pride of Patterson California, is a graduate from the San Jose State Animation/Illustration program. If we had to compare animation students to horses based on the amount of work they did in school, she’d probably pick a unicorn. I however would have to classify her as a Thoroughbred or one of the ones that pull the Anheuser-Busch carts.

Megan used to come in with animation tests of epic proportions, ask for a laundry list of things to improve, and come in two days later with a completely revised test. And then ask for more things to fix! She was like a machine taking on both traditional and digital tests, never seeming to get tried, and never losing her upbeat attitude.

Fortunately for me, Megan’s worked on every project I’ve produced since 2004 (including never before seen top-secret films) and I’m especially thankful for her big contribution on Fumi and the Bad Luck Foot. She animated the cat in the intro sequence, did inbetween on the rain scene, and in the ending where Fumi walks into the sunset, among other parts of the film. Inbetweening as fast as I could crank out keys.

During her senior year, she interned with Bert and Jennifer Klein working on an independent film of theirs, graduated to go straight into character animation on the Simpson’s Movie, and is now working as a character layout artist on Futurama for Rough Draft Studios (along with Mr. July, Drew Pierce).

Megan’s a top notch player, and I’m very glad to have been on the same team with her so many times! So please raise your pink frosted doughnuts in honor of House of Chai’s Miss August, Megan Kelly. Be sure to check out the Simpson's Movie, the rest of her samples below, and visit more of them by clicking here.

And always remember the phrase she made famous, “Animators do it rough and all night long!”
