Every month, in no particular order, this page will highlight one of the many artists who has contributed to the production and success of House of Chai productions. I’d love to include a page of links to all of the artists I admire, or even to just the ones I know and respect. But if I did, it would require a webpage that would scroll as much as the Torah!

House of Chai - Featured artist of the month
May 2008 - Miss Fumi Nakamura

The mysterious Miss Fumi Nakamura

The House of Chai opens its doors wide to this month’s featured artist, Miss Fumi Nakamura. Fumi is a talented illustrator and designer that I met in one of our classes at San Jose State University, and I’m damn glad I did!

Struggle Against Reality and Unreality. Graphite and colored pencils.

Fumi was the true life inspiration for the concept behind Fumi and the Bad Luck Foot. One day in class, she mentioned that her foot attracted bad luck. She shared with us stories about getting scissors stuck in it at her mother’s sewing shop, times when it would get caught within the spokes of her bicycle wheel, and she even shared that one of her legs was a different length than the other. This sparked the idea for the film, which was animated the very next summer.

Severe Punishment and Severe Bliss. Graphite and colored pencils.

Fueled by cigarettes and tea, Fumi takes in the world from the seat of her bicycle; making her way through life like a cracker through a cheese platter. Eating up every experience, and digesting it into an array of emotionally evocative artwork and ideas. Fumi is grand like a canyon, and equally as deep. For a tiny gal, her work is pretty heavy!

Magic Number One. Graphite and Photoshop.

This chinchilla loving lady presses pencil and pen to paper profusely, and promises to provide worldwide. Her work can be experienced in exhibitions from San Francisco to New York to Australia, and most conveniently online at her website miniminiaturemouse.com

Sweet Kiss. Graphite and colored pencils.

You are Your Own Enemy. Graphite and colored pencils.

It’s for these reasons The House of Chai hoists it’s sake glass high in honor of Fumi Nakamura for the month of May!

Fumi is always available for any freelance illustration & design, commission works, gallery exhibition and projects of any sort. Please click here to check out more of her work.

Thanks Fumi!!!
